Another side of the things: the autoconf/automake is clearly a
hard-to-understand thing for beginners. The error messages typically don't
mean much, since the effects of errors in autoconf/automake process show
themselves a lot later, when invoking the actual make. In the long run, I
consider it a hassle since learning curve is steep, and people need to learn
something that's not essential to whatever coding/fixing they actually want
to do.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to move to stable, industry-strength package like
cook? Cook is a make replacement, and it's one of a hell of a workhorse. It
natively supports network (say lan/intranet) distributed builds, and is very
straightforward to use, and cleanly extensible to support
architecture-dependent quirks.

Cook's webpage: http://www.pcug.org.au/~millerp/cook/cook.html

Cheers, Kuba
