as far as I remember there was a rather lengthy thread on either kde-devel or 
kde-core-devel with a discussion on that subject. Obviously in the end the 
current solution was regarded as the way to do it. I don't like it either and 
switched on the synchronization right away but well...

Maybe you could try to find the thread to find out about the reasoning for the 
current default behaviour.
