Hmm I tried this - and it won't work. It appears kmail doesn't read the 
alternateBackground color entry in kmailrc ?

Well, how about there a barely styles that allow for the lines around a 
groupbox (in the colordialog you see them around Color Scheme, Widget color 
and Contrast) to be light and the background color (widget color) very dark ? 
I for one wouldn't know how to get this fixed - introduce another 
configureable color for those lines ?
