greets.
things have generally gone swimmingly with kde3. a couple of little
surprises, though, which i suspect are related.
when i open a text file by clicking on it in konqueror, i get a dialog
asking me to specify the encoding to be used. this, i figured, is an
innovation. but . . .
i notice now that in kmail, asian characters are displayed correctly.
this, too, is cool (though they make it no more likely that i'll be
able to read them <g>).
but when i log out of kde3 and am at the console prompt, i have not
nice, normal roman characters but a collection of stuff that looks
like a cross between high ascii and ansi characters.
which suggests that there may be some configuration that i've missed.
there's a little flag icon docked to kicker with the letters US on
it, and while i think it would be lovely if this were some sign of
solidarity or something, my guess is that it's to note the
personalization option currently running.
has any default changed in this regard?

There is sobbing of the strong,
And a pall upon the land;
But the People in their weeping
Bare the iron hand;
Beware the
People weeping
When they bare the iron hand.
