I have found that when I have background images setup to change every so 
oftern (60 minutes), that the X process consumes more and more memory.
Eventually my machine runs out of memory. 

You can easily test this out. 
Setup your background image to change every 1 minute, and use top (sorted by 
memory SHIFT + M) to see the 'X' process consume more and more memory.

I am currently running KDE 2.2-1 (RedHat 7.2), but I have this same problem 
with previous versions as well.
