Is there any communication between (us and the Trolls) and developers of
software we depend on (kernels, windowing systems) to get such things
implemented? I can imagine some of the stuff in Qt is there the way it is
because of talks with KDE people, perhaps that ideology could be extended?

Where are the distributions with this? Sounds reasonable to hire someone to
improve XFree86 because KDE could benefit from it, the same way as the work
that is being done in cooperation wit the gcc team because it will improve
projects like KDE.

Would it be wise to politely ask Keith Packard (hi) and discuss some of our
needs (and those of GTK as well) with their team?

As KDE and GNOME get bigger, it's only natural that the KDE team extends
development to some non-core parts. I'd love to see someone with more kernel
finesse than me make a kernel mod/util which allows mounting of kio_slaves,
for example.
