Well, it looks like it might be fixed now; I've just tested some rather
long strings (3000 characters) using Dirk's <pre> trick.  I watched it run
with xscope and saw that the library split the input into 12 pieces of <=
254 characters each and the server dutifully drew the first 100 glyphs on
the screen.

Please, test with this URL and let me know if some servers are still 
causing problems:

I'm running a hacked version of Qt 2.3.1 -- it has fixes for pointer-root 
focus mode, but is otherwise standard.  Not that I need the hacks anymore 
after I switched from twm -- KDE's window manager doesn't use PointerRoot.
