I can tell you at least that the htdig code does some nasty assumptions at 
quite some points that assume it's using a web server. The mode we're using 
it in, is not very well supported and now together with external references 
it became even more complex :(

I thought (for a moment on a fairy) about forking htdig and only using the 
parts we need, but it's still a lot. I once reported a bug on sourceforge, 
but as I can't find it, it might have been fixed (the last beta is from end 
of february, doesn't dare to download their CVS).
