you know ... kicker applets with monitors are fine ... as long as you 
don't auto-hide kicker. :(
and i certainly won't disable the auto-hide for one applet. 
an external dock dock bar, that dynamically adjusts its size, might be
the right solution. but then apps would need to supply a hint to the
dock manager: should they go to the "non-hide" bar (if any) or the
normal bar? hmmm ...
