Yes and no. This will look like, well the computer beeps so there must
be something wrong. Also the beeps are very annoying if you're working
with several people in one room (which is the case here). Also, the
thing is that the UI has to be brought up as fast as possible. See kmail
and ns mail. kmail processes the folders before showing up I think,
which takes some time on slower machines; netscape comes up and shows a
progressbar (which is what kdevelop does as well). When the ui of the
app is open the user knows it's starting, but the loading of the program
such as staroffice takes *waay* too long to wait for the splashscreen.
Also there are *many* users that think spash screens will consume too
much memory and what not, so they disable them anyway.

Conclusion is, that if you have an empty desktop you need the desktop
display the wait cursor. This in conjunction with kicker showing the
start indicator would solve this problem I think because if the user has
a window open and maximised, he uses kicker to start another app
usually. Then the progress indicator is enough. 

Has anyone had a look at gnome's Xalf yet ?
