Andreas, you wrote the great american novel. really :)

But you bring a good point, there's a lot of stuff that is almost entirely 
generic across all platforms (or at least Linuxes)

And you're right, we make a stand now, or this fragmentation gets worse and 
worse.  Also, if we write this, distributors might be wanting to switch their 
config style to another distribution's, so they won't have to create their 
own settings modules for this.  This, however, is wishful thinking :)
