I think the only safe way to solve this will be to come to an agreement
with the Gnomes to set a property on the (first) mapped window of an
application. Thankfully this is supposed to happen already thanks to
the NET_WM standard. The other thing that needs to happen is that .desktop
files carry an extra field stating whether they are ok for map-notification,
i.e. if they promise to set the pid property when they map their first window.

I'll write to the gnome-kde list about this.
