Hi!
I got that error when I tried to compile kdeutils. It has something
to do with the Makefile generation code, which is in perl.
Three things to try:
1. Update again (this problem is being worked on and may have been
solved)
2. If not,
   ./configure --disable-fast-perl
3. Or, if your perl version is < 5.005, get a more recent version. 

I used a combination of the last two and am now happily desktopped.
