Sorry for delay; in answering this.

See the blog I made quite some time ago on a new widget that is especially 
designed for just such a purpose. See the screenshot and start reading 
one parag above that.
Not sure, but I think the C++ / Qt4 code is created by danimo, so maybe 
thats already in kdelibs :-)
