Yes yes yes. Sound play should be

- raw sound card driver (OSS, ALSA), which would be good enough for 90% of the 
cases, since most cards come with an internal mixer and support multiple 
opening of their /dev/dsp

- some other software backend just for the sake of it

Forget features like network transparency, sound effects (and plugins in 
general), and real-time playing. These are all either useless in practice or 
not worth the hassle.
