This is not true. It is used as a SASL mechanism (although it is not a
standard one). It is not more related to IMAP than to any other protocol.
It is also quite common with SMTP.
Native IMAP login works:
x LOGIN "user" "pass"
and has nothing to do with the LOGIN SASL method which works
x AUTHENTICATE LOGIN
x .....
