a) this is not necessarily true. some languages/toolkits/oses don't
even provide (useful, that is complete) async i/o, so the use of
threads is the only solution.
also, its surely a question of preference (some like to go the hard way,
you know :).
b) an app that is supposed to be really efficient usually won't malloc()
as wild.
