no. the related commit previous to this should be reverted.
i'm sure there was a problem with just calling clear blindly.
these changes cause all sorts of preloading static crash on
shutdown stuff that won't be found for another few weeks probably.
sadeagle can u remember the conditions? i seem to remember you having
a clue about this stuff :)
