That's the point -- ROX does not ship its own applications, for example(or 
perhaps I got your statement wrong?)

Sure, I agree that's an problem, although I do to a lesser extent. But do you 
know what I find more important?

* The usability problem caused by a flooded menu with more or less identical 
entries

* The integration problem caused by a dysfunctional XDG spec(since it leads to 
usability issues)

And you forget something -- we only do this to programs which are more or less 
identical. E.g., there is no major reason for the user to prefer GFoo infront 
of KFoo(kwrite/gedit for example). You may care, and I may care, but not the 
99% of users out there. So strictly speaking we "force" users to one choice, 
but no one cares since the other choice is the same.
This aspect, as most other usability issues, is a question of compromise and 
majority approach.
