Ah, and what I meant was that apps that require KDE 3.1+ could _also_ choose
to install to 'default' instead. The KDE build system would then recognize
the special tag 'default' in internally map it to 'hicolor' for compatibility
reasons.

At least, that's what I meant when writing this mail. But after reading
Havoc's mails on core-devel I think 'default' is a bad naming and 'kde
default' should probably be used instead (although using 'default' would also
work with Gnome and other desktops if I understood Havoc correctly. Hmm...)

I think ideally $KDEDIR/share/icons/hicolor should become a symlink to
$KDEDIR/share/icons/default, or the other way round if we want to ensure
hicolor is a 'pure' directory to avoid breaking apps depending on that.
Additionally any app that wants to install icons into 'default' should have
them installed in 'hicolor' and the required magic is done by either the
buildsystem or such a symlink (whatever works reliable).

I hope this explains it a bit more, I don't really know how to describe it,
sorry :-/
