After calling "setxkbmap de" on the command line, the pipe symbol works as
expected. Switching the keyboard layout from "ch" to "de" with the KDE keyboard
tool still produces a keyboard layout where the pipe symbol is *not* working.
Therefore it looks to me like a problem of KDE.

Sorry, but no. I prefer using the standard German keyboard layout and do not
intend to learn another keyboard layout just because of a software bug.
