I don't understand exactly the long output of 'qmake -d', but I made a simpler test:
--- project.pro ---
message($$QT)
message($$CONFIG)
-------------------
$ qmake
Project MESSAGE: core gui
Project MESSAGE: lex yacc warn_on debug uic resources qt warn_on release incremental \
release stl qt_no_framework

I see both "debug" and "release" inside CONFIG, so it seems to me that both 'release' \
and 'debug' are set by default in my system and not only 'release'. Why you say it's \
not so? Sorry, but I really can't understand.
