kfontinst -x .fonts should've been either
    kfontinst -x /home/root/.fonts
    kfontinst -x /usr/local/share/fonts

.i.e. it needs the complete path to the folder - its only a helper app used by \
fonts:/, so its quite simple. The "-x" option tells it to configure the folder for X \
- i.e. it should do something similar to mkfontscale & mmkfontdir.

Does kfontinst -x /usr/local/share/fonts crash?

If this does crash, can you try it on a folder *just* containing your arial.ttf?

The "-f" option should add the folder to fontconfig's files - but again it needs the \
complete path. So

    kfontinst -f /usr/local/share/fonts

Should add /usr/local/share/fonts to /etc/fonts/local.conf (if you're using \
fontconfig <2.3), or /etc/fonts/conf.d/00kde (if fontconfig >=2.3). I think its \
broken at the moment and always adds to /etc/fonts/local.conf even for >2.3, but this \
is still OK. (/etc/fonts/fonts.conf should not be used as it will be overwritten the \
next time you upgrade)

What are the <dir> contents of /etc/fonts/local.conf and (if it exists) \
/etc/fonts/conf.d/*.conf ?
