Could you try rebuilding kdeinit with debugging info? Maybe it will output something \
interesting to ~/.xsession-errors.

If it doesn't, another possibility is to attach strace -f (or FreeBSD's equivalent \
syscall trace program) to the running kdeinit and see what it does.
