If you reduce the size of the history, you lose data without any need to do 
so.

I do not think this is the right way to tackle problems, do you? Especially if 
there is a way to solve the problem instead of avoiding it.

If you reduce the number of messages in the chat-window to 20 in order to get 
a perfomant chat what happens to the messages that are beyond this limit? 
Losing them is not an option.

If you read through my proposal again, you might notice that the idea is to 
have a performant chat-window without restricting the user in its choice of 
style and/or forcing him/her to disable/limit the history or messages 
recorded for the (current) chat. Why would one want to restrict the user's 
possibilities if there is no need to?
