Yet more information:

OK, the screensaver starts every time now. My mistake, I had Kaffeine in the tray, \
that disables the screensaver.

The screensaver (Virtual Machine) works correctly now, with the proper background. \
Mostly. The problem was that I was using the slideshow background for the desktop. \
Now I have a solid color background, and the screensaver gets the correct black \
background, most of the time. But the problem remains, only it's much rarer now: \
Sometimes Virtual Machine (and possibly others) use the desktop background when \
running in a second VC.
