Further information:

Today I've been switching a lot between the two sessions as described. Occasionally \
the screensaver shows the correct black background. But now I've seen several times \
that the screensaver hasn't started at all, which is even worse.

About bug 39864 (early 2002):
A user ask for the screensaver not to start in an inactive VC (what I call session). \
Chris Howells commits a patch that solves the problem, but it's not completely clear \
to me whether it prevents the screensaver from starting in an inactive session or \
only when DPMS is active. Possibly I'm reading it incorrectly.

In any case, the screensaver acts very strangely and inconsistently on my machine. \
I'm not using DPMS.
