Yes, Alt-F2 will still work.

ps aux | grep kicker

What I was wondering is what happens if after kicker disappears as you 
describe, you go to kcontrol (running it via Alt-F2 if need be), turn off 
autohide in the panel settings, and apply. Does it reappear, or not?
