This bug no longer seems to be a problem.  The "Format"->"Adjust row and 
column" option will size each column to just as large as is necessary.

The "Format"->"Column"->"Equalize Column" option does behave as you described.  
However, that is the intended functionality of that command.

If I have misunderstood the issue here, please resubmit the bug with more 
detailed information.
