Actually, I used the "X" from "edit-delete".  It looks different in the
SVG [attached] but the reality is that most of the time it is going to
have a screen size of 5 to 10mm and none of that pretty detail is going
to show.

First, as you have said, people have been misusing the icon and they are
going to want an icon without an "X" for these wrong uses.

Duh!  That is the purpose of having an icon for the generic root of a 
name tree, to fall back if that icon is missing.  We have a lot of 
"view-*" icons and it appears very unlikely that all icon themes will 
have all of them so a fallback is clearly needed.  I am at a loss to 
understand why you think that this is a bad idea.

IIUC, you think that it would be better to have the correct icon from 
the wrong theme than a fallback icon from the theme being used.  I think 
that most people will disagree with that.  Specifically, people that 
make icon themes will disagree with that.
