Maybe, in that case, it would be intresting a flashing icon like noatun's 
systray plug in that shows you that it is playing or even better, an animated 
icon, like kopete's when there's a unreaded incoming message. 
 
What you may add as a non-intrusive way of showing the current task is, a 
little message like noatun's systray icon does when a new song starts... a 
message that appears for some seconds and then disapears, very non intrusive.
