OK.  For what it's worth I just built KDE 1.93 with the latest ALSA
stuff installed -- i.e.:

  alsa-driver-0.5.9b
  alsa-lib-0.5.9
  alsa-utils-0.5.9a

And you're right, the last two are not needed.
