Sorry, I expressed myself wrong.
 
I only have 2MB graphicmemory so I boot into and mostly run at 800x600 24bpp.
But some applications make it necessary to switch to higher resolutions. This
only works with a diffrent colormode. 
my way now is:
	->ctrl+alt+F2
	->login root
	->kill X
	->logout root
	->login user
	->startx -- -bpp 16  

I hoped now for an easier solution that does not require root and still makes
it possible to boot into KDM.
