You've already received a host of messages about it so I am just
going to add that it actually isn't useless at all. You can also
minimize the "irritation" and maximize your screen realestate by
editing the properties for the panel and selecting the Options
tab, then selecting autohide across the board and setting the
delay time to be short. You then only see the panel and the
taskbar when you want to or need to. You can have different
autohide settings for the panel and for the taskbar too, to
fit to your desires and needs.

That taskbar is quite nice for minimizing windows, re-maximizing
windows, bringing a particular window to the front, closing
windows, and so forth. It is a handy list of open apps
without having to run top or ktop or something (seeing those
apps that you have directly opened, of course, not cronjobs
or other auto-scripts).

Subject: How can I get rid of the upper bar ?

I just installed a Red Hat 6.1 distribution with KDE/Enlightement as
Desktop.
I have a (ugly and useless...) "application bar" or "task bar" on the
upper
border of my screen (it is not the "MacIntosh bar"...). It is the bar
that
hosts the "iconized" windows.
I was unable to find any mention of this thing, neither in the on line
documentation nor in the FAQs.
How can I get rid of it?
Thanks
