Another thing which might help is magic SysReq key sequences
Look through KERNEL_SOURCES/Documentation/sysrq.txt

If you have no kernel sources, there is short extraction:
1) You should enable SysReq support in the kernel
(enabled in the most common distr's)
2) SysReq = Alt+PrintScreen key on x86, Alt-STOP on SPARC
3) SysReq k = kill all programs in this vconsole
SysReq e = send SIGTERM to all programs, except for init
SysReq i = send SIGKILL to all programs, except for init
   SysReq s = sync filesystems
   SysReq u = unmount/remount_RO filesystems
   SysReq b = reboot system
4) if your system locks up, try Sysreq-k first. If it's not helps,
   use SysReq-e/i.
And, Sysreq-s,Sysreq-u,Sysrec-b sequence is much better than RESET
button.

FREE HINT: Don't release Alt key while typing Sysreq commands
