Changing KDEDIR doesn't change the directory where system looks for
libraries. You are still trying to load QT-1.4x.

To change the library you have to update /etc/ld.so.conf to point to the
correct directory. Since probably you want to have __both__ KDE-1.1.x and
KDE-1.89 running, you will have to install both versions of QT in different
directories and make a symlink (say /opt/qt) pointing to the one you need at
a given time. Now, update ld.so.conf to look for libraries in the symbolic
directory you created.
