This is not entirely true. What becomes an important part of Linux is an
OpenSource product (that, incidentally, also has a comercial version). For
Linux users, Qt is as free as KDE, kernel, g++ and many other packets. But,
if you want to use Linux to make money (writing programs using Qt), I don't
see the problem in letting Qt developers charge you. The example may be a
little childish but, would you demand free computers so no "commercial
product becomes an important part of Linux"? (Hey, what about a FreeHardware
Foundation) ;-D

MS VC++ license may be cheaper than Qt, but think about it this way. If you
don't have a VC++ licence, you can't distribute the software you create (not
even for free), since MS forbids redistribution of their libraries. Of
course, MS doesn't spend any money/time in pursuing private people that make
free software with a non-licensed VC++, but strictly speaking, they could.
OTOH, as long as you develop free software, you can use Qt at will (you can
even customize it to your needs).

So, what's the real (and legal) cost of using one or another in a Linux
environment?
Answer: Qt - 0 for a product that you can use as it was yours
MSVC++ - 1 license fee for a closed product that is as it
is - take it or leave it
Now, what's cheaper?
