There are two main files used for startup enviroments. I didn;t learn this
until I started using debian..

Use the .bashrc file for _non_login_ environments. Alternatively use the
/etc/bashrc file for a global environment. For a login shell, you should
use the .profile file (or the /etc/profile). Some systems even use the
.login, .tcshrc, .cshrc, and .shrc files for this.
