On Redhat and some other distributions the last section of
/etc/profile looks like:

for i in /etc/profile.d/*.sh ; do
        if [ -x $i ]; then
                . $i
        fi
done

That is, all the scripts in /etc/profile.d are executed.  Take a look
at the one called kde.sh.
