I expect the problem exists on the other BSDs on Intel.
I don't know how standard machine/endian.h is.  BYTE_ORDER is likely
ok, and if so, the first chunk can likely be #ifdef BSD.  Although
then we have to be sure that BSD gets defined (need sys/param.h).
 
I'd be suspicious about the __byte_swap_* macros in the second chunk.

We need some feedback from the other BSD platforms.
