I've thought about this problem, too (and the problem of non-Linux OSes as
you mentioned).  What about a KDE hack to glibc?  Would patching 
the basic file i/o functions to send kfmclient messages do the trick?  If
you compiled and installed a patched shared glibc on any system it seems
like you'd have solved the problem at least for programs which are not
compiled with static libc linkage.  (Then you'd need to recompile all of
them and that would be a lot to ask.)
