I think kdm starts following files (like xdm does):
usr/X11/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession
$HOME/.xsession
usr/X11/lib/X11/xdm/sys.xsession

On my Suse 5.0 system, the .profile was not read in these files.
I have added 

 . $HOME/.profile  

in the  .xsessions file and everything works fine.
