To know the PID from the active window you can try something like this:
window=`xprop -root | grep '_NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW(WINDOW)' | awk '{print $5;}'`
pid=`xprop -id $window | grep NET_WM_PID | awk '{print $3;}'`
