Sure, its due to the fact that the betas of kde3 are made not to override your 
default install and is located probably in /opt/kde3 or /usr/local/kde rather 
than in the Mandrake /usr for kde2.

Your panel/control keep the paths to the icons so if you removed kde2 and did 
not rename your home/USERNAME/.kde folder then kde3 will not regenerate and 
it will look in your old location and not find them.

Not that keeping kde2 solves the problem; it merely lets kde3 use the old 
icons but when pressed they try to start kde2 apps giving errors.

So you know what to do... :-) The old standby rename /.kde (and clean /tmp 
while you're at it).
