Unfortunatelly, you can't change distance between icons. That's the reason I 
don't use icons on my desktop. I am going to send this to kde-wishlist:
1. Different sizes for desktop and Konqueror icons (I would like to have small 
icons on desktop and bigger in file manager).
2. Only text on desktop (without icons), when I, for example, add link to 
location on my desktop.
3. Only icons (without text) on desktop, when I, for example, add link to 
application.
4. No forced distance between icons without text (this would save a lot of 
desktop space).
