All I needed on my machine was to compile in ACPI support (you have to
select various options under it. Someone noted that "System" was the
important one, I don't know about that). I didn't need the acpid daemon to
poweroff. I think that's just if you want to respond to events (so that
pushing your power button causes a shutdown event to occur) but I have not
worked with it. I believe the same is true with APM (i.e. you don't need
apmd to poweroff, just APM support in the kernel).
