hang/crash under heavy load is not uncommon, seems to be aggravated by
several factors - SMP, kernel 2.6 etc..
(I get a freeze occasionally on my ultra1 under heavy disk activity too
(SCSI), but not my ultra5 (IDE) interestingly enough)

Have you tried booting the machine on a single processor?
