I haven't tracked down what is going on on my systems far enough yet
to see what is going on, but the updated baselayout does seem, shall we
say, to be "eccentric." E.g. (on an SS20; I haven't rebooted my U2)
  1.  Error messages on shutdown about not being able to unmount a network
      file system (I have one, it can and does umount it)
  2.  Warnings about circular dependencies with checkroot at boot.
  3.  Lots of 'modprobe ... no such device as /dev/pts/...' warnings to
      console at xf86 startup.

I wasn't going to say anything until I could say something useful; it 
might just be being more wordy than it used to be. But you asked, so I'll
add my preliminary observations for what they're worth.
