Hi Dennis!
I think you should boot from the live-cd, chroot in your gentoo environment 
and check your grub.conf file. Maybe your root parameter to the kernel is 
erroneous root=/dev/hdaX (or sdaX), check that this really corresponds to 
your root partition, if this is the problem you probably won't be able to 
take a look at the logs because they are stored in /var/log/ (normaly root 
partition).
