Yes I did that one and had checked paths as I have several of the extra
fonts installed as well I went and installed several windows
fonts/dingbats so I could use them in gimp.(tho gimp itself is being
tempermental on one script. The one for doing web arrows/buttons it
locks on but works fine in windows gimp<shrug>)

Nope. I've not heard of that command. I used mkfontdir and xset I
believe when I installed them. I'm using bbconf for dealing with themes
and it has the theme name nothing more.

Now with gfontseletct, xchat, etc they all see all the extra fonts.
Except tho artwiz shows frankly personally I don't see much diffrences
between how each looks but then again they are quite small(size 8).
